Tour of Imperfect Recall

It's a month since the launch of the exhibition and it's all gone pretty well. Very positive feedback and a decent attendance - even a few sales!
For those of you who couldn't make it you can take a visual tour at the link below.

Imperfect Recall tour

I've now shrunk the exhibition for the second month. This was due to the rear art of the gallery being rented out. Not ideal as the show feels a bit clumsy and squashed now. At least it was recorded for posterity and you can see it the way it was intended. I'll be working in the Architect's Gallery every Saturday if you still haven't been down yet. I make a decent cup of coffee and welcome the company!

Imperfect Recall

Imperfect Recall brings together a group of artists exploring memories as trace and fragment. Working in a variety of media, all ten artists map the rich and unsteady ground between past and present; history and recollection. Whether drawing on found material, as in the case of Ceuppens, Reid, Sirbu, Smith, and White or producing false memories from the familiar outlines of 1960s nostalgia, like House, the works question simple notions of recollection and feeling for the past. Russell and Culley construct works that, in different ways, fix the evanescent traces of memory in forms that thus are inherently distorted. Uglow and Bainbridge work through layers of media to produce works that evoke the rudimentary, uncanny landscapes of the unconscious.

THATNESS AND THERENESS: Exhibition update

I'm thinking of naming the forthcoming exhibition 'Thatness and Thereness' after this, one of my favourite tracks, by Ryuichi Sakamoto. I love the animation too.

I now have nine confirmed artists and one pending for the exhibition. I'll announce the list soon after I've spoken with Sam at the gallery, just to make sure she's on board with what I'm trying to do. It's all very exciting.

Private View: Friday September 24th
-the show will run for apx 7 weeks (tbc)

Anyone know of a potential sponsor?

A fantastic cover version of the same track by Momus. And a really nice video again.

Sci-Fi Week

Accumulative hangovers from stag parties, election parties and parental guidance parties have left me feeling a little lost.
I've drifted into a week of watching sci-fi films and reading comics (...it's all research you know). I highly recommend it but it's pretty hard to engage in a conversation at the post office afterwards.

News and news

This spring/summer should be interesting.
I've been asked to show with another artist at the Architect's Gallery, I believe in late April and it also looks like I will be guest curating at least one show at the same venue. Details are sketchy for both at the moment and the curatorial effort may well be for the Teddington Society show - which will be some challenge. There are also plans afoot to set up stall at the Affordable Art Fair this October. Another solid opportunity for me as both exhibitor and gallerist. No bias there then...

I've several new paintings under way that will hopefully be ready to include in the above AG show. Under wraps at the moment but previews in due course. Some older ones need attention too but I'm not sure where to take them yet - no, not the skip although at times starting again really does seem the best option. The arrival of Spring should at least herald bountiful productivity and promise for the rest of the year.

News from the gallery

A nice mention from the curator of the Architect's Gallery.

Sam currently has about ten of my works in stock at the moment with five being part of the current show. You've still got a couple of weeks to see the exhibition before it changes over.

Website refreshed

Another item on the New Year list ticked off.
The old original Paul Smith website has been refreshed to include a good few of last years paintings and to lose a handful of older pieces that I see as less relevant now. I'm planning to overhaul the website completely later this year but only when I've finished the 20 or so pieces that are currently in development. You should see a significant shift in direction for my work that will be reflected in the design of the site. In the meantime you might see a few clues to the road ahead in the paintings section.

Welcome

A new year resolution realised.

I've been sitting on this half empty blog for some period now. I couldn't decide what it was for. Is it a diary, a sounding board, an information desk? I suppose it should be all of the above and more. I might as well make it a place to show you some influences, introduce you to some friends and show you some sights.

Let me know what you think along the way.
